Keeping Safe in Winter Weather

Back

Winter weather can be a worry to many older people. It's important to be ready for cold snaps because they can occur quite suddenly. Chills, slippery conditions, and cold and flu season can all be a cause for winter worries. Here are some tips for riding out the storm while staying warm, cozy and safe.

Preventing Chills

Older people sometimes have reduced circulation, making them more susceptible to cold and chills. An important step to keeping warm is to make sure your central heating is in good working order before winter hits. You may also want to add a few extra blankets to your bed at night or even an electric blanket.

When venturing outside in cold weather, make sure to wrap up - pay particular attention to covering hands, feet, ears, and your head, which are particularly vulnerable to the cold.

Preventing Falls

Winter weather brings slippery conditions that can make falls a possibility. In order to stay safe, be sure to wear warm shoes or boots with non-slip soles. It's also a good idea to keep a mixture of salt and sand handy to put on steps or paths in icy weather. If weather is particularly icy, it may be best to stay inside until the weather warms up.

Keeping Your Spirits Up Indoors

Sometimes winter weather will require you to stay inside more than you'd like. Local grocery stores can deliver provisions, which makes staying indoors possible, but it's understandable to feel down when cooped up inside. To boost your spirits, make sure to stay connected to friends and family by speaking on the phone. Whether you watch a favourite TV show or enjoy a good book, it's important to take time everyday to do something you enjoy.
